The Inca Trail 4 or 5-Day Trek is one of the most famous hikes in the world, leading to the breathtaking ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. It follows an ancient trail used by the Incas and offers stunning scenery, archaeological sites, and a rewarding final arrival at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku)

FIRST DAY: CUSCO – OLLANTAYTAMBO – KM 82 – WAYLLABAMBA

 

Pick up from your hotel and then go by bus to Piscacucho located at kilometer 82 (2,800 m / 9,186 ft.), on the way we will pass through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, through the towns of Urubamba and Ollantaytambo, here we will make a little stop to have breakfast and can buy some supplies for the walk, then continue to Piscacucho.

In Piscacucho Km. 82, we will organize all our equipment to start the trek. In this first part of the way, we will arrive at Miskay (2,800 m / 9,186 ft.), from there we will begin to ascend towards a small mountain where we will be able to see a beautiful landscape and an Inca construction called Patallacta, located at 2,750 m / 9,022 ft., in this place we can observe some terraces of crops, urban centers, religious centers. After this stop we will continue towards Tarachayoq 2,800 m / 9,186 ft. Where is our lunch point.

 

After lunch we will continue walking through an area full of vegetation where is possible to observe a variety of flora and fauna, after walking for 2 hours we will arrive at our first camp located in the Huayllabamba area at 3,000 m / 9,842 ft. Huayllabamba is a small village surrounded by fields of corn, potato crops and other products, here we will have our first camp, Té time and dinner.

 

DISTANCE: 12 KMS / 7.45 MILLAS

TIME: 7 HOURS

 

SECOND DAY: WAYLLABAMBA – AYAPATA – LLULLUCHAPAMPA – WARMIWAÑUSCA – PACAYMAYO

 

This day we will go to ascend the Warmihuañusca pass, we will begin our walk with a gradual climb towards the Ayapata Valley which will take 1 hour to arrive, from there we will walk along the original Inca trail this part of the way to the pass will be uphill with steps or stairs and the path is covered with full vegetation that will take us through a cloud forest to reach Llulluchapampa 3,800 m / 12,467 ft,  we will have a beautiful views of the landscape, is whrere we will take our lunch. After the lunch we will continue for  2 hours more until the Warmihuañusca Pass, Quechua name meaning “dead woman pass”, 4,200 m / 13,779 ft.

Arriving at this point we can appreciate all the way we walked and a beautiful view of the Andean snow and landscapes. Then we will begin to descend to our campsite Pacaymayu (3,600 m / 11,811 ft), 2 hours the way will be down, flat, stairs where our tents will be ready and take a good rest for the next day.

THIRD DAY: PACAYMAYO – RUNKURAKAY – SAYAQMARCA – CHAKICOCHA – PHUYUPATAMARCA – WINAYWAYNA

 

This is one of the longest days, but at the same time one of the most beautiful, where is possible to see Inca constructions along the way. After a nutritious breakfast we will start our hike ascending upstairs 2 hours.

We will arrive a second pass where the impressive archaeological remains of Runkuracay (3,800 m / 12,467 ft) are located. From where we will have a beautiful view of the Andes and continue until we reach Sayaqmarca (3,600 m / 11, 811 ft), “The village dominant ” 1:30 hours where we will appreciate interesting Inca constructions, and we will have a panoramic view of the Aobamba Valley.

During the tour you pass through Conchamarka, a small archaeological site recently discovered. Afterwards, we continue arriving at our lunch point called Chaquicocha, and then we will walk a beautiful path to Phuyupatamarca passing through an open tunnel in the rock, then continue climbing until we reach the third and last pass, where we will see the Archaeological Site of Phuyupatamarca 3,665 m / 12,024 ft, “Town covered with clouds”, which is one of the most original places along the Inca Trail. It is located on the edge of the mountain. Here we will find many terraces and ceremonial fountains

 

After visiting this site, we will descend around 3,000 downstairs until to Wiñaywayna (2,700 m / 8,858 ft), 3 hours more which means “Forever young”, and the last camp before Machupicchu. This will be the last night with our cheff and porters, we will say thank so much, see you, bye bye, chau chau… to everyone for sharing this beautiful experience with the group.

FOURTH DAY: WIÑAYWAYNA – INTIPUNKU – MACHUPICCHU

 

On this last day, we will get up very early 3 or 3:30 a.m. to then have breakfast, we will walk to the control there we will wait 1:30 hours in the control of Wiñaywayna, passing the control we will walk for 1:30 hours and we will arrive to Intipunku or Puerta del sol 2,490 m / 8,169 ft.

It is an excellent opportunity to take panoramic pictures of the citadel of Machu Picchu in the distance. This is perhaps the best place and time to contemplate the majestic splendor of Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas.

 

Then we will descend for 1 hour to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, where we will have a guided tour by our tour guide approximately 2 hours. After the tour you can visit Huayna Picchu (is not included in the tour). Then we will go down by bus to Aguas Calientes 2,160 m / 7,087 ft, where you can enjoy a lunch and take the train back to Ollantaytambo and by bus to Cusco.
